Job Function

As a Chemical Operator, you will make adjustments to the chemical processes as required either manually or through automatic remote means to keep the plant safe and operating at peak efficiency. You will be responsible for recording the data on log sheets and in unformatted operation logs. At all times, follow safety guidelines maintaining awareness of the hazard of all materials handled. Personal Protective Equipment and labeling required. Rotating Shifts in a Chemical Plant operating 24 hours / 365 days.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • The Chemical Operator is responsible for the chemical production process including: 
  • Materials: Designation, Quantities, Proper handling methods for raw materials, intermediates, products and byproducts
  • Chemical Reactions: Fundamentals including sequence of addition of reactants and reaction steps; sequence of events expected during reaction steps, required temperature, pressure, levels and flows for proper processing
  • Equipment: Operation of auxiliary equipment and testing of final product using specific gravity and pH measurements
  • Production: Produce products of required quality and quantity safely with zero spills, air emissions 
  • Record Keeping: Maintain log for production records, operations and maintenance data
  • GHP: Maintain a very high level of housekeeping in work area and properly apply product / warning levels to all product and waste containers
  • Calculations: Use handheld calculator to do simple arithmetic calculation for batch sizing and weight determination 
  • Safety: Be able to read and understand Material Safety Data Sheets and perform within OSHA & Cal/OSHA guidelines following correct policies and procedures at all times 
  • Material Handling: Drive forklift in tight quarters. Connect/disconnect hoses to bulk containers (like railcars/tank trucks) for loading and unloading operations properly to avoid spills or an emission

Skills & Qualifications

  • Must be able to do moderate lifting
  • Must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time; climb stairs and ladders to high places
  • Computer skills
  • Excellent communication and listening skills
  • Must be able to work rotating shifts
  •  Must be able to pass post-offer physical, drug test, background checks and other appropriate test as required

Education Requirements

Desired: Process Technology; Chemistry; Chemicals or related field Required: Completion of high school diploma or GED equivalent

Experience Requirements

  • 2+ years’ experience in a chemical manufacturing plant or petroleum refinery
  • Experience in a facility conducting batch or continuous chemical synthesis using hazardous chemicals
  • Basic knowledge of functioning of chemical processing equipment - agitated reactors, heat exchanges, pumps, absorbers, scrubbers and instrumentation required
