Job Function

The Programs Manager is responsible for managing all aspects of the company’s incentives’ programs including the initiation, tracking, review, payment request and approval process, and SOX compliance.  The Programs Manager tracks the incentives, analyzes program performance and provides analysis on a quarterly and annual basis.  Additionally, the Programs Manager is responsible to maintain the Company’s accounting records as it relates to programs and is the primary point of contact with the Company’s internal and external auditors in all program matters. 

American Vanguard Corporation is a diversified specialty and agricultural products company that develops and markets products for crop protection and nutrition, turf and ornamentals management, commercial and consumer pest control. 

American Vanguard and its subsidiaries offer various incentives to customers as part of the normal course of business and pay such incentives to customers on a periodic basis, typically at the end of a crop year.  In the U.S. agricultural chemicals industry, such payments are known as “Programs” and are a critical part of doing business. 

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Oversee management of the company's various incentive programs, including the review and processing of distributor, retailer and grower program payment requests
  • Organize and track all modifications to programs and ensure that such program modifications have been appropriately approved and are properly documented
  • Ensure that all program rates are accurately captured in the company's accounting system
  • Maintain the programs roll forward schedule and ensure they reconcile to the company’s general ledger
  • Collaborate with members of the commercial team to ensure programs are planned effectively
  • Organize periodic program review calls with Product Managers and Regional Business Managers to discuss current and upcoming programs, changes to existing programs and status of outstanding program payments
  • Participate in monthly sales forecast calls and provide program updates as necessary
  • Prepare quarterly program accrual files that detail all outstanding program accruals
  • Draft the quarterly programs review memo
  • Prepare quarterly programs analyses at the request of the company's external auditors
  • Lead quarterly program accrual review meetings with CFO and CEO
  • Perform detailed annual analysis of customer sales/program performance and summarize analysis for CFO and CEO review
  • Ensure that internal control procedures with regard to programs are being adhered to and ensure proper documentation of internal controls is being appropriately maintained
  • Oversee the Company’s CSR (Competitive Situation Response) program tool and assist the Regional and Marketing managers’ use of the tool in support of the CSR approval process
  • Collaborate with the company's third-party service provider(s) in order to ensure timely processing of program payments
  • Track status of all outstanding program payment requests and assist with ensuring timely management approval process of all outstanding program payments

Skills & Qualifications

  • 5+ years’ experience in Accounting or Finance with a demonstrated track record of career development
  • Strong Excel skills
  • Motivated self-starter who is detail oriented
  • Works well under pressure in an entrepreneurial environment
  • Must be able to work independently on assigned projects
  • Flexible, team player with strong communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to travel (approximately 10%)
  • Work from the Corporate office (Newport Beach) as required
  • Must pass post-offer background checks and other appropriate tests

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Accounting or Finance; MBA a plus
